Labour candidate Elsie Bates has been elected on to Newcastle Borough Council following the result of the Newchapel by Election which was caused by the stepping down of the Conservative candidate due to work commitments.
The Newchapel by election saw a poor turnout with only a small proportion of the electorate bothering to cast their vote. The result was most encouraging for UKIP as they picked up a strong percentage of the vote, no doubt helped by recent European issues. It was a poor showing for the Lib Dems though with them only achieving 17 votes out of the total. Once again this result shows that the Lib Dems appear to be losing out locally as a result of the parties actions in Government.
This result may be further evidence of why members are switching parties at the moment.
