Kidsgrove Broadband Speed Test

kidsgrove broadband speed testKidsgrove residents and visitors to Whitehill Online will do doubt be aware of the discussion regarding broadband provision in Kidsgrove. The UK Government has also been discussing broadband provision for the whole of the UK, with a recent report suggesting that the UK’s average broadband speed is now 9Mb . This got us thinking how this compares to the broadband speeds experienced by Kidsgrove internet users.

Today we are launching the Kidsgrove Broadband Speed Test. The whole idea of this is to collect the broadband speeds from Kidsgrove residents and compare these to the UK average. The UK Government is suggesting that by 2015 we should all have an average speed of 30Mb, which seems like it could be possible on the whole if fibre optic connections are rolled out all over the UK.

Taking part in the Kidsgrove Broadband Test is really simple, just follow the steps below:

  1. 1.Visit http://www.speedtest.net/
  2. 2.Click the “Begin Test” button. This will now test the speed of your broadband connection.
  3. 3.Once complete you will see a box containing your Download and Upload speeds
  4. 4.Click the “comments” link below and share your Download and Upload speed.
  5. 5.Your done, thank you for taking part in the Kidsgrove Broadband Speed Test

We are getting 6.84mb download and 0.32 upload. Quite suprised that it is that slow considering we are only 300 yards away from the BT exchange.

cheers keith but virgin isn't an option for this estate unfortunatly, cable isn;t wired on the blackbird way estate, and BT infinity aint either doh.

A royal pain in the arse, especially as there's fibre provisioning all the way along Turnhurst road! Hopefully when the Kidsgrove exchange gets upgraded to infinity someone will remember to upgrade the cab at the top of the estate.

its standard practice to just "get the sale" so to speak and she is perfectly right that adsl broadband gets weaker the further you get from exchange infact im quite suprised you get the 2.6mb. only way to get faster is use virgin if they are in your area.

Hi, thought i would tel you all my recent experience with sky broadband, im'e from packmoor and have always had slow connectio problems, buffering problems, etc, a friend of mine told me do the speed test, i did and was recieving 0.6 of a meg download speed, i rang sky after watchin my mate laugh at me and complained, after diagnosing hundreds of faults on my line, these were manually put right there n then, which knocked up my download speed to 2.6meg, i asked why i wasn't able to get more, and was told that this was the max we could get on this estate due to the fact we were 7 kilometres away from the nearest exchange, and they could only guarantee a service up to 5 kilometres ! i told her we were never told this at the beginning, or we would have stayed with BT, she then goes on to tell me that the O.F.T take these things very seriously and i was saying that i was miss sold and someone could lose there job, i dont want anyone lose there job, but we were never told. advice plz any 1

type 192.168.1.1 in address bar type admin for username and admin for password > click on advanced and then yes on window that pops up then hit stautus at top and the statistics on left copy and paste all the stats please i may be able to help get higher speeds :)
also are you using any phone extension or sky boxes connected to phoneline ?

no still seems to cut off but does last an hour or so at a little slower speed than normal. this leads me to believe its BT/Openreach's end where the problem exists, my connection to talk talk goes live wednesday and i think that having no problems with previous provider (o2) i will be fine again.

sync is 17xxx kbs down and 10xx kbs up normally at 6db noise margin and 27db attenuation.

its only really the outskirts of town that suffer slow speeds as they get further from the exchange. i lived in clugh hall road at the top by the ski-slope and could attain 19mb there also. i do know of some closer places that get lower speeds in region on 10mb but it seems the line these refer to go all round the estate before hitting the property.

Has your line improved since yesterday?

Broadband speed seems to have many factors which influence the overall speed you can achieve. The most important seems to be the distance to the exchange and the line quality. New cooper wire going a short distance will easily reach the maximum potential.

As I understand it though, even living next to the exchange will not always result in the maximum speed. Your provider will have a connection ratio. This is how many other people your sharing your broadband with, again something that can have an impact on your broadband speed.

There are many other factors i'm sure which can have an impact. It is quite interesting to see how some parts of Kidsgrove are really suffering with slow internet connections.

its talk talk but has been fine since i connected last week.

some parts of kidsgrove can get full 24meg from adsl2+ my old address in warwick close obtained 22meg with only a 15db attenuation

Yet some parts of Kidsgrove seem lucky to get 1meg. Sounds like a BT issue, I'd get the line owner to give them a call. Its good to hear someone happy with Talk Talk.

anyone having issues since the rain in whitehill or kidsgrove and surrounding areas? i am using my neighbors connection while waiting for mine to transfer providers anyway since the heavy rain yesterday i keep losing routing to the exchange and am experiencing ALOT of noise on the line (SNRM)

Hi Ian. What provider are you with? I had it a while back however that was oxidation on the copper connections at my end. It could be that something has got in the local exchange, however that would be a BT issue.

I can't believe how slow some parts of Kidsgrove are. I would love to know what speeds people next to the exchange are getting. I bet Market Street is fairly quick as well with just being around the corner.

Talke Pits

My Broadband has been this slow for about 6 or 7 years now, it's pathetic. My mobile phones data connection is faster.

That is really bad. Surly you would be better getting a 3G dongle and using mobile broadband. Do you have Virgin around Talke Pitts?

It is rare on VM that it is this quick!

That is very impressive. I know in London VM is up to the 80s but have not seen anyone locally report over 30.

A good decent upload speed as well. The results for everyone else seem around 1 which I guess is a result of ISP capping.
