Sainsburys have withdrawn the plans which they put in with Cheshire East Council for a new store in Alsager. This store is topical as it has really divided opinion in Alsager on if residents support or oppose the plans for a new Sainsburys supermarket.
Sainsburys say they have withdrawn the plans in Alsager to allow them time to act upon some of the issues highlighted in the planning report, however they will submit the plans again in the future. It will be interesting to see if Sainsburys sticks to the original plans for a store in Alsager or looks for a new site, which could see them moving a few 100 yards up Talke Road into Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Some residents in Alsager feared that there was not enough demand for a new supermarket with the Co-Op undergoing improvements and the provision of Tesco, Kidsgrove. Others, however believed that a new Sainsbuys would attract shoppers from areas like Kidsgrove to Alsager and improve their local economy. What is interesting is that any development in Alsager like this will be sure to have an impact on Kidsgrove. Quite if Kidsgrove residents will be feeling the same as Alsager residents on hearing this news is quite hard to tell.
