It has been on the cards for a while now and I think that Mary has mentioned it before when this issue has been raised around recycling, however Newcastle Borough Council have announced today that from March 2010 all general waste collections will be fortnightly. This will affect all residents, including those in the local area of Kidsgrove and Whitehill.
They argue that that improved recycling system now makes this possible and such collections will encourage increased recycling, however there are some studies which suggest that such collections actually lead to an increase in the amount of fly tipping which takes place. Im sure that a financial argument will be placed on this as well, however the Kerb Side recycling scheme should in theory be not costing the tax payer anything due to the value of the items collected and the revenues from this waste which the collection company receives.
There is also controversy over the plastic bags used to collect plastic, which are not very environmentally friendly and the fact that the green card bags could blow off once emptied and chucked on the floor by the collection contractors.
